  10. Hi! You have Savoy Brown in New York on March 24, 1973 but I have my ticket stub from their show on that date at Mackey Arena at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana...the Chi Lites were there also & my ticket price says $3.50...this show was at 8pm - maybe they played NY in the afternoon & then this one on their way to somewhere else - I doubt if they were actually touring with the Chi Lites so both bands were probably doing a "drive-by"..lol...

  15. Hi Bruno - what a massive undertaking this list is! I can help with some Savoy Brown info - I used to go see them a lot and kept good records of when & where. On March 22nd, 1972 your list has them playing in Springfield , Mass. but I saw them (with Fleetwood Mac and Long John Baldry) at the University of New Haven that night. The Springfield show must've fallen through for some reason. Also, the band played on July 28th, 1973 at Suffolk Downs Racetrack in Boston with opening sets by Bluec Oyster Cult and the Alessi Brothers! Once again, I was there. I'll go through my notebooks and be back in touch. -PD

  19. Love this list, but I wish you could add SB's appearance at Cobo Hall, Detroit with Deep Purple & Tucky Buzzard. I can't seem to find the exact date anywhere....in fact, it tends to be listed as Deep Purple with Elf for March 3, 4. But dammit, I was there, and I know it was February-April of 1974!!

  21. Hi Bruno

I wonder if you can cast any light on a rather fsded memory? When I was in my last year at school - 1966 I believe - The Savoy Brown Blues Band played for the school dance at The Sir Anthony Browne School Brentwood, in Essex - now known as simply "The Brentwood School." They shared the bill with Tony Knight's Chessmen. They were the first two UK Blues Bands I'd seen at the time. I recall Savoy Brown having a guitar/piano/harp/bass/drums line-up, but I don't remember Brice Portius. In fact I went to see the band at the June 21st 1967 gig at the Uppercut in Ilford and was gobsmacked by the change in line-up. Did the band ever gig without him, or is my memory at fault? I didn't see the band again until they appeared at the Manor House Blues Club in Haringey, where they supported Freddie King, by which time Chris Youlden was with the band, but I can't place a date on that one. Any further info greatly appreciated! Stevie King.

    1. Hi Stevie!

About Brice Portius, well, he was a founder member of the band so he was there since the beginning, but, who knows, maybe he was sick and missed the gig you saw at your school....everything is possible! Anyway, about the school gig, you don't remember the exact date or an approximate date? at least are you sure about 1966?

About the gig with Freddie King at the Manor House, well, of course I don't know all the gigs the band played, so I trust you about that gig and I hope to find the exact date one day!

      Cheers,
      Bruno

  22. Hi Bruno

I've contacted my old school in case they have any records of the date SB played there. If I get any info I'll let you know.

  23. I saw Savoy Brown at the Lyric Theatre in Kitchener Ontario, Canada. The date escapes me though. It was either the late 70's or early 80's. They were great and were always a favourite of mine. One of my first 5 records I ever bought was Raw Sienna, and I played it to death! They get played regularly still.

  24. Bruno, I would be interested to know your source for the Springfield, MA September 17, 1970 date. I know for certain they played the Capitol Theater in Springfield, MA on August 5, 1970 with Chicken Shack. It is possible that they played the same venue within 6 weeks but I would be interested in the source for that date.

    Thanks,

    Greg

  25. I first Savoy Brown show was in Chicago March 15 1972 at the Auditorium theater. Thanks to this blog.
The show was unique because it was interrupted by some crazies who got on the stage and took the mike. A ramble ensued and the security at the time (weak)let the guy go until they could escort him off the stage.
Does anyone remember this concert? Please tell me this happened.
I saw Savoy Brown in Phoenix last year and asked Keith about it. He didn't remember. How could he, so many performances.
Now scheduled to see the band in June and looking forward to them at the Mt. Baker Blues Festival in Washington in July.

  28. Hi Bruno,
Another gig to add to your list. Having played Mothers club in Birmingham on the last day of 1968, the band were on stage for the Wednesday night regular gig at the Toby Jug, Tolworth, on January 1 1969 - exactly a week before their old mates Jethro Tull played before leaving on a Scandinavian tour. They were billed as Savoy Brown Blues Band, and they must have looked bleary-eyed after the late-nighter in Brum.

  30. RE Springfield, Capitol Theater, 1970:

There is the (EXCELLENT, IMHO) official live 1981 released vinyl-only album, titled "Just Live" on the long-discontinued German Line Records label which has:
    a) the band clearly encouraging "Springfield" during their encore number to participate;
    b) a comment from Kim Simmonds (I believe) to the effect that their new album would be out "in two weeks time". Now, their then forthcoming album "Looking In" was indeed released in October 1970 in the US, so the point in time would fit perfectly for dating the show September 17th.

Hope this helps more than it confuses.

Ceterum censeo: I can only recommend to get this album somehow, it is a real fine document of the "Future Foghat" line-up with lots of stretched-oot Kim playing. Both LP sides luckily run way over 30 minutes, even if that sure limited the dynamics. However, one still gets well over an hour of a soundboard-recorded show! Alas, the last numbers of both vinyl sides, "It Hurts me Too" on side One and "Encore Blues" on side Two, both fade out midway through so it is safe to assume we miss out a few minutes of their entire (probably 70-75 min.) set.

    Savoy ahoy!
    Th:-)mas

  34. Bruno,
You have the April 3-4, 1974 performances of Savoy Brown listed as "Municipal Auditorium, Denver, TX, USA with Deep Purple, Tucky Buzzard". It should be Denver Coliseum, Denver, CO; same venue as the August 4, 1973 performance. As for Tucky Buzzard, we did not see them, they were not listed on the tickets nor the Marquee. I suppose its possible we arrived a bit late and they had already finished a short set, or that they played one night and not the other.
Anyway, a truly memorable concert. They were hot! At one point Mr. Simmonds came down the isle, stood on a metal folding chair about 30 feet from us, and jammed for 15-20 minutes. After that, Deep Purple were something of an anticlimax. I mean, they were great, very polished, but aside from the sheer, painful volume of the last half hour, nothing unexpected or particularly memorable.

  35. Hi Bruno
I went to a gig in Reading Town Hall in 1971 or 1972 with Chicken Shack and Savoy Brown.
I can't find anything about it anywhere. It's possible that it was a one-off gig as in early 1972 there were a lot of power cuts and gigs were cancelled at short notice then rescheduled.
I recall the band playing mostly Street Corner Talking material with a great Kim Simmonds solo on All I can Do is Dream.
Any chance you can track this gig down?

  38. Hi Bruno. In December 1975 I saw Savoy Brown's Wire Fire tour at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr, PA. It was right around the time of Kim's birthday. They did a blistering version of All I Can Do Is Cry with Kim dropped to his knees as the solo was brought down. Small club, great gig.
