  1. Ciao Bruno, I have a list of gigs at the Galaxy Club, Basingstoke 1964 - 66 compiled retrospectively from adverts in a local paper. LJB & HC Men listed as appearing twice; 22/8/64 Town Hall with Westsiders and E Types, 3/7/65 Town Hall with local band Evil Eyes. Marquee lists LJB gig on Thurs. 1st July. Steampacket formed later same month. Any thoughts? Raz :-]

    1. Thanks Raz! I've added the two gigs at the Galaxy Club to m shows list and of course I give you the credit for the help!

About Marquee, yeah, you're right, the band was listed on July 1, 1965 on the venue website, but I have also a complete shows list taken from the book "London Live" and they are not listed there, so I do not know if they play or not there that day. Still uncertain!

About Steam Packet, yes they were formed later that same month, you see my band "family tree - shows list" that I've also posted in this blog? if not, check it out!

  2. Bruno, I have been trying to establish whether Rod Stewart came to Basingstoke! It seems pretty certain that he was in the line-up for 22/8/64. We know that he did a stint with the Soul Agents which seems to have ended in April '65 but none of the websites I've visited seem to know what Rod was doing between April and Steampacket's first gig on July 16th! Great site btw, I'll probably acquire more info about Galaxy Club gigs and I'll happily pass it on when I'm sure it's accurate. Cheers, Raz :-]

    1. Raz,

Rod Stewart was certain there for the gig on August 22, 1964 as you can see in my band's family tree he left the band only later in late October 1964.

About The Soul Agents, you also see my band's family tree and shows list in this blog? Rod was with them from early January 1965 to June 1965 (not April 1965).

Between June 1965 when he left The Soul Agents to mid July 1965 when he formed The Steam Packet, Rod played just a couple of gigs as solo act backed by The Brian Auger Trinity (you know, it was like a pre-Steam Packet gigs), one on June 24 at the Birdcage Club in Southsea (with also Gary Garr that shared the vocals with Rod) and one on July 9 at the Eel Pie Island Hotel in Twickenham.

      Cheers,
      Bruno

  5. Does anyone have any additional dates/info for Sonny Boy Williamson in the UK 1963-1965? I have compiled some of the better known ones but would be grateful for anything else?

    1. Good to hear from you Mr. Barnfield! I love The Attack and I'd like to keep in contact with you (my email is: brunodoors@libero.it) so we can talk about the time you was with them. About Baldry, well, I didn't know about a gig at the Kingston Tech College neither when he was with The Hoochie Coochie Men (1964-65) or more plausible later when he was with The Steampacket (65-66) but I will research...

  7. Hello Bruno, Just curious if the date for the first R&B Festival at the Birmingham Town Hall is correct here (February 28, 1964) and the 1990 CD on Repertoire Records (RR 4090-WZ) containing several songs from the show (along with nine Steampacket demos) is wrong? The CD lists the festival as February 2, 1964 (a date you show them performing in Dundee). The date is significant, because, as far as I can tell, the live R&B Festival show actually includes the earliest recordings of Rod Stewart available. His first studio recordings with Long John Baldry would be on March 4, 1964 for the b-side, "Up Above My Head". If you have any other info or confirmation, I'd appreciate your response. Cheers, Kip

    1. yes, wrong date, the festival was on February 28, the original album has the correct date as you maybe know. The recording date of the first single is still questionable to me, could be something like Tuesday, May 5, 1964, because apparently, according to both Baldry and Stewart memories, Baldry kicked Rod out of the band on Tuesday, April 28 when Baldry was late at a Portsmouth gig after he made a solo appearance earlier that day on The Beatles TV special, so Rod fronted the band and started the show instead of waiting for Baldry and when the latter arrived he was furious about that and fired Rod, then he reinstate Rod in the band "a week later" on the same day of the recording session, so this is why I think the date could May 5 or something like that.

  8. Hi Bruno,
Thanks for clearing up the R&B Festival date, I will now go with February 28, 1964, and consider that still to be the earliest recordings of Rod Stewart (live or studio) that are available. As for the single b-side, I had never seen an actual recording date, until I purchased a 2006 2-CD set titled, "Looking At Long John Baldry - The UA Years 1964-1966" (EMI 9046 3 50899 2 9). In addition to the two early Long John albums, it includes some 1964-1966 singles and previously unreleased material as Bonus Tracks. There is nothing specific on the recording dates for any of them (just the year of recording/release), and the "You'll Be Mine"/"Up Above My Head" single is one of these, of course. However, as part of the unreleased material found on Disc 1, there are three recordings from what is listed as an 'Ottilie Patterson Session' recorded on March 4, 1964 featuring Long John, Rod Stewart and the Chris Barber Band's singer, Ottilie Patterson. It says that of the three tracks, one is just John on "Hoochie Coochie Man" (apparently released somewhere), and the other two, John with Ottilie Patterson and Rod Stewart, are previously unreleased: "Up Above My Head - Take 3" (which, unlike the single b-side, does feature both Ottilie and Rod backing John) and "Got My Mojo Working" (also with Ottilie and Rod backing John, and this is definitely a different version than the 'Long John Blues' LP version).

So, as for this Take 3 version of "Up Above My Head", it sounds like the same session date (instruments/band/piano intro, etc.) only that Ottilie was also there to sing with Rod on this take. Perhaps to someone, the TWO backing vocalists made it sound 'too busy', so Ottilie was left out for either Take 1 or 2 (maybe she arrived late?), or even on a later take than Take 3, for the final master of the released version. Either way, I would have to assume this is most likely the same recording date for the released take (1, 2 or ??, but not 3) of "Up Above My Head". Until I see or hear otherwise, I'm going to go with March 4, 1964, for Rod's very first studio recordings. But, who knows, CD liner notes can be wrong, just like the February 2 date for the R&B Festival, right?!? Thoughts?
    Cheers, Kip

    1. I didn't know about this CD, great new info, thanks Kip! Well you could be right, my guess date is just because Baldry in his autobiography remember that the session was a week after he fired Rod on the same day he filmed the Beatles TV special. So, because the special was on April 28 according to all the Beatles' historian out there, I guess that the session was around May 5, but well, Baldry could remember wrong of course, you know, no one remember what really happened in the 60s! ha ha

    2. maybe the A-side was recorded a week after the Beatles TV special, and Baldry just wrongly remember that also the B-side was recorded on the same session, I don't know

    3. well actually I doublecheck, it was a mixed memories from both Rod's autobiography and Baldry's biography. Rod just said that the session was in June, sometime after he was readmitted in the band after the Beatles/Portsmouth gig, while Baldy's book said that it was on June 19 and it was a week after Rod was readmitted in the band (although the Beatles TV show was on April 28 so actually should be almost 2 months after), so well seems no one really remember. Also June 19 for me is the release date not the recording date, because we know the single was released in June 1964 exactly

  9. Yes, it appears that memories can get blurry after a decade or two (or five)! Well, if June or June 19 is considered the release date for the single, then March 4 sounds practical for the recording of at least the b-side. Not sure about a recording date for the a-side "You'll Be Mine", it could have been before or after that, or on the same day, if they knew in advance that the song was going to be the a-side of the single they wanted to record. I'll have to go with March 4 for "Up Above My Head", the released version and the unreleased Take 3, and also that unreleased version of "Got My Mojo Working", the latter two with Ottilie Patterson. I don't think the CD researchers/liner notes writer would make that date up or pull it out of the air. They had to have come across it somewhere, either written on a tape box or an official session log, at least that's my opinion. If you would like pics of the CD booklet, or even the CD recordings themselves, let me know. Cheers, Kip

    1. sure they have some confirmed source for that date! I see the booklet pics on "Discog" website, the package look nice, here in Italy is impossible to find these recordings, you should order them online from other countries but is difficult and very expensive. I'd like to listen the CD, you could transfer it on digital MP3 files and send me via email (brunodoors@libero.it) or via DropBox.

BTW, you see my new website? http://brunoceriotti.weebly.com/

  10. Our blues band (the RBQ) gigged with LONG JOHN BALDRY AND THE HOOCHIE COOCHIE MEN, which included Rod Stewart as lead vocalist at the time, at the University of Bristol's Victoria Rooms in 1964, could have gone on into 1965, gigs that are not listed above. They were on Saturday nights. We also played with some of the other American and British bluesmen you mention, such as Memphis Slim, the Graham Bond Organisation, etc. Not sure if I have records of any firm dates.
